Epson EB-L795SE or Panasonic PT-VMZ7ST? Why SIM|GOLF chose Panasonic

7,000 lumens, laser, 3LCD, short throw and a professional price bracket. On paper the Epson EB-L795SE and the Panasonic PT-VMZ7ST look almost identical. In a golf simulator, the differences turn out to be far more interesting.

At SIM|GOLF we look at a projector differently than you would in a meeting room or a home cinema. A bright, pretty image is not enough. The projector has to hang exactly where it does not bother the golfer, does not cast a shadow on the screen, does not enter the swing zone — and simply has to keep working for many hours a day. So we took a close look at two very strong candidates: the Epson EB-L795SE and the Panasonic PT-VMZ7ST. Both are very good. And we will give away the ending right now: SIM|GOLF decided to work with Panasonic. Not because Epson is the weaker projector — in some areas it is actually better. That is exactly what makes this comparison interesting.

Two projectors built for a similar job

Let's start with what they share. Both use a laser light source and 3LCD technology, both offer native WUXGA 1920 × 1200 resolution and 7,000 lumens. Epson quotes 7,000 lm for both white and colour light; Panasonic quotes 7,000 lm to the ANSI standard. That is a very good configuration for a simulator. Unlike many single-chip DLP projectors there is no colour wheel here. In an application where the player's eyes jump between the ball, the screen and launch monitor data, that is something we simply like.

Both are genuine installation projectors: lens shift, geometry correction, multiple mounting positions and short-throw optics. And optics is the first thing we look at in a simulator.

In golf, the projector has to be in the right place

For our typical large installation we assumed: a 4.50 m wide screen, the ball roughly 3.50 m from the screen, the projector mounted about 2.90 m above the floor. Epson's throw ratio starts at 0.79:1, Panasonic's at 0.797:1. In practice, with a 4.50 m wide image the lens of both projectors ends up almost exactly above the line of play:

  • Epson – about 3.56 m from the screen,
  • Panasonic – about 3.59 m from the screen.

And here something happens that may at first feel counter-intuitive. In a golf simulator you do not always want the projector as far from the player as possible. A very good position is high above him. The club head path is not a simple half-circle — the swing happens in space, on a tilted and changing plane. A projector mounted high, close to the vertical line through the impact zone, can in practice be in one of the safest places. At the same time the light source is practically above the player, so the risk of his head appearing as a huge shadow on the fairway is minimal. In this respect both projectors fit a large golf simulator very well.

Epson EB-L795SE – an image that impresses

Epson has one advantage there is no point hiding: 4K Enhancement. The EB-L795SE has a native WUXGA panel but uses 4K Enhancement at 60 Hz, and Epson claims an image corresponding to roughly 4.6 million displayed pixels. On a large screen that matters. Grass, tree branches, bunker texture, building outlines and the far background of the course look very good. On a screen more than four metres wide, every extra level of detail becomes visible.

So if the question were which of these projectors to choose purely for maximum image detail? — the answer would be simple: Epson. That is a genuinely strong side of the EB-L795SE.

Epson also has more versatile optics

Its lens range is 0.79–1.36:1 with 1.7× optical zoom, plus lens shift of ±50% vertically and ±20% horizontally. That gives the installer a lot of freedom. It is a great projector not only for golf but also for immersive installations, museums, digital signage and other simulation systems — Epson itself lists sports simulators among its applications. The laser is rated at about 20,000 hours in normal mode and up to 30,000 hours in Eco. In short: a very good projector.

Panasonic PT-VMZ7ST – less spectacular on the spec sheet, very convincing in a simulator

Panasonic took a slightly different route. The VMZ7ST does not pretend to be a 4K projector. It has three LCD panels at 1920 × 1200. It accepts a 4K signal over HDMI or DIGITAL LINK but scales it to native WUXGA. Does Epson look better on paper here? Yes. Does Panasonic look bad? Absolutely not. In golf, pixel count is not the only component of image quality. Brightness, contrast, colour, the behaviour of greens, image uniformity and — very importantly — the surface you project onto all matter.

Vivid Green Mode – a feature that genuinely makes sense in golf

Panasonic created a dedicated Vivid Green Mode, intended among others for golf simulators. The projector changes the signal characteristics, boosts greens and optimises colour balance and mid brightness levels, for more natural and intense green areas. We are normally cautious about names like "Golf Mode". Here, though, the idea makes sense — a huge part of the image in a simulator is fairway, rough, green, trees and course surroundings. If a projector can put its 7,000 lumens exactly where the golfer's eyes spend most of their time, you start to understand why Panasonic designed the VMZ7ST with sports simulators in mind.

A small thing installers really appreciate: powered focus

On the Epson, focus is set manually. Panasonic offers powered focus — focus adjustment from the remote. Sounds like a detail. Until the projector hangs almost three metres above the floor. For the first installation you can climb a ladder. The problem starts when, after mounting the screen, correcting geometry or servicing, you want one more minimal adjustment. On the Panasonic you do it standing on the floor.

7,000 lumens, but Panasonic needs less energy

Panasonic quotes about 295 W in Normal mode at 200–240 V for the VMZ7ST. Epson quotes about 388 W in normal operation. Both nominally deliver 7,000 lumens. This does not automatically mean Panasonic will be more durable or cooler in every condition — that conclusion cannot be drawn from power draw alone. But in a device hanging several metres above the floor and running for hours in a closed room, less energy to dissipate is simply welcome.

What about durability?

Here both projectors are already professional-class laser devices. Panasonic rates the laser light source in Normal mode at about 20,000 hours until brightness drops to roughly 50% of the initial value, and about 24,000 hours in Eco. Epson quotes 20,000 hours in normal mode and 30,000 in Eco. On paper the advantage is Epson's. But 20,000 hours in a simulator is a lot — at 2,500 hours a year that is about eight years. That is why, when buying a professional projector, we start to ask not only "How long should it work?" but also: "What happens when it does stop?" And that is where our decision was made.

Why did SIM|GOLF ultimately choose Panasonic?

Because for us a simulator is an installation, not a collection of devices. The customer does not buy a projector, a screen, a computer and a launch monitor as four independent boxes. They buy a place where they want to play. If one element stops working, the whole simulator stops working. At home that is annoying. In a golf club, hotel, training centre or commercial indoor golf venue it becomes a real business problem. So towards the end of the comparison we stopped asking "Which projector has the better spec sheet?" and started asking: "Which manufacturer do we want to be with when a problem appears?"

And here Panasonic convinced us

Professional Panasonic Connect projectors are covered in Europe by the Premium Service programme. Standard cover includes 3 years for parts, labour and logistics. Panasonic points to European service centres and a declared target average repair turnaround of about 5 days door-to-door. Subject to availability a replacement unit is also foreseen, and the system includes a European helpdesk, technical support and repair tracking. For the PT-VMZ series, Panasonic's terms also cover the laser light source for 3 years or 20,000 hours — whichever comes first. ProTect extensions up to five years are available too.

Epson also gives a three-year warranty and offers CoverPlus extensions, including options up to five years. The standard for the EB-L795SE, however, is described as 36 months Carry-In. And it was precisely this difference in service philosophy for professional equipment that mattered more to us than the extra sharpness from 4K Enhancement.

Our verdict

If we were choosing a projector primarily on maximum image detail, the Epson EB-L795SE has very strong arguments: 4K Enhancement at 60 Hz, a wide optical range and excellent brightness make it one of the most interesting short-throw projectors for sports simulation.

But looking at the whole life of the installation, SIM|GOLF's choice is different. The Panasonic PT-VMZ7ST gives us 7,000 lumens, a 3LCD laser, very good short-throw geometry, lens shift, powered focus, Vivid Green Mode designed with sports simulators in mind, 20,000 hours of light source life in Normal mode — and above all a very concretely organised European warranty and service network.

That is why the Panasonic PT-VMZ7ST is currently our default choice for professional SIM|GOLF installations. Not because it won every point of the comparison — it won the points that, over several years of use, we consider the most important.

And what about the difference in image quality?

One element is very often forgotten in projector comparisons. A projector does not display an image in mid-air. It displays it on a screen. You can buy an excellent 4K projector and then lose a large part of the effect on impact fabric that is too thick, too loose or heavily textured. That is why at SIM|GOLF we treat projection quality as a system: projector + geometry + room lighting + screen.

And this is where our IMG Impact Screen comes in. IMG is a 3D spacer material (fabric made in the USA) designed first and foremost for image quality. Its structure was selected to improve perceived contrast, sharpness and colour saturation while still absorbing ball impact energy effectively and limiting noise.

And that is a slightly contrarian ending to our test. Epson can generate a more detailed image. Panasonic gives us more confidence in the whole installation. And a well-chosen IMG screen makes the difference between "a good projector" and "a good image in a simulator" much smaller.

Because in a golf simulator we do not look at specifications. We look at the course. And we want to believe we are really standing on it.
